Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz was featured in a recent episode of the Menism’s podcast, during the interview, he was asked about his activism. The rapper who was one of the pioneers of the #ENDSARS movement explained that, contrary to what people think, he had being into activism long before the EndSARS protests.

He attributed the origin of his activism to his family. Falz, born by a Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist, Femi Falana (SAN) revealed that his father’s activism was a major motivating factor that made him who he is presently. He said his father has been into activism for over 40 years and still counting.

According to him, his father have selflessly touched lives through his activism and the testimony of his benevolence resonates everywhere he (Falz) goes. That became an exemplary life for him to emulate.

Also he referenced Fela Kuti’s songs which were his favourites while growing up, as part of the things that held sway in his activism life. Fela Anikulapo Kuti was a Nigerian musician and political activist, who used his song’s lyrics to send direct messages to corrupt politicians. Until his last breath, Fela was a deadly thorn in the flesh of every military and civilian administrator that sat in the presidential chair of Nigeria. Falz being an ardent listener of Fela’s songs, got influenced and eventually began to use his songs to advocate morality and kicks against corruption in government arena.

He said, “Apart from the Fela records, my dad is someone who has been an activist for maybe over 40 years so having someone like that as a father, everywhere I went, someone had a story about what he did for them. So that level of selflessness, which was an example for me so early on, played a part in shaping me and who I became. That was always at the back of my mind so with everything I was doing with my record, I drew inspiration from everything around me.”
