Nigerian singer, Onyeka Onwenu, dies after performing at a party

Renowned Nigerian musician Onyeka Onwenu reportedly slumped and died after performing at a birthday party in Lagos on Tuesday night.

A source very close to the family told journalists that Onwenu was invited to perform at the birthday party of the Fidelity Bank MD, Dr Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe. The singer, as usual, dished out a marvellously intriguing rendition which wowed the audience, and just after returning to her seat, she slumped and was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she was subsequently confirmed dead.

The actual cause of her death is yet to be ascertained, as no official statement from the doctors in that regard has been released.

Singer Onyeka Onwenu died at the age of 72. She was born on May 31, 1952, in Arondizuogu, a small town in Ideato North, Imo State, southeastern Nigeria, but was raised in Port Harcourt, the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria.

She was not just a singer; her career spanned several spheres of life, including Politics, journalism, and acting.

She debuted her first album with Polygram, In The Morning Light, in 1984.
