Woman kills four-day old stepson with insecticide in Bauchi

In Bauchi, a 24-year old woman has allegedly killed her co-wife’s four-day old baby with an insecticide.

Police Public Relations Officer of the Bauchi State Command, Ahmed Wakil, made this known in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the statement, which revealed that the incident occurred at Bantu Village in Ningi Local Government Area of Bauchi State, disclosed that the baby was born on August 15, 2023 and was killed by the suspect on August 19, 2023, before his naming ceremony.

The Police PRO, Wakil, said that the suspects identifies as Abubakar, entered her co-wife’s room with an insecticide and forced the newborn baby to consume the substance. This led to the little boy’s death.

The PPRO said, “Operatives attached to Bauchi State Police Command have arrested Furera Abubakar, female (24) of Bantu village, Ningi Local Government area of Bauchi State for the offense of culpable homicide.

“The incident was reported to the Ningi divisional police headquarters on the 19th of August, 2023 which revealed that the four-day-old baby was born on the 15th of August, 2023 and was murdered by the suspect, Furera Abubakar, on the 19th of August, 2023 before the naming ceremony.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect is a co-wife to the nursing mother (victim’s mother).

“The suspect entered the co-wife’s room with insecticide liquid (Gramalin) and applied it to the unhealed baby’s umbilical cord.

“The liquid which was suspected to be corrosively affected, and led to the deterioration of the baby’s health eventually led to his death.”

The PPRO also said that investigation into the incident is discreetly ongoing. He assured the bereaved that the suspect would be profiled and charged in court accordingly for prosecution.

In another development, eight people have been reportedly killed in a recent attack on two Benue communities by bandits.

The incident reportedly occured in the Chitto and Gbeji communities in the Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State when two rival bandit groups engaged in a killing spree.

According to sources, the clash started on Monday but continued to Tuesday and has thus led to the burning down of a market in the area.

Locals from the area who didn’t want to be named said five persons were killed in Chitto on Monday, while another three were killed in Gbeji on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.

One of the locals who spoke to journalists, Tuesday, said, “Five people were killed yesterday in Chitto, a suburb of Ukum LGA by bandits.

“They burnt the market. It was a different attack from that of the list livestock guard who was killed in Tine Nune. Four were killed in Chitto and one was killed in the suburbs of Chitto in two different attacks making five.

Another source from Ukum LG also told journalists that the bandits killed three persons on Tuesday along the Sankera-Chitto road.

He said, “To the best of my knowledge, the bad guys are fighting themselves. I think that is the summary of what is happening there. One faction is facing the other. We have the presence of the military in Zaki-Biam and yet they continue to operate like this. It is unfortunate.”

Confirming the incident, member of the state House of Assembly representing the Ukum state constituency, Ezra Nyiyongo said that information at his disposal was scanty.

“You know I don’t stay there now but when I heard of the incident I made a call to DPO who told me that three corpses were recovered so far and taken to the mortuary, beyond that I will need to confirm from him again,” the lawmaker said.

As of press time, the state command spokesperson, Catherine Anene, had also not received information on the development.
