Daniel Dubois gets advice from Jarrell Miller’s former trainer ahead of December 23
Jarrell Miller’s former trainer, Shane McGuigan, adviced Daniel Dubois ahead of fight with Miller which is expected to be held on December 23.
The two heavyweights are good at what they do, but one of them is seen as likely to be afraid of the other ahead of the bout because of the things the assumably-scary one has been saying. McGuigan was speaking to Pro Boxing Fans when he spoke about Dubois who is coming from a defeat to unified heavyweight champion Oleksander Usyk and how he should think.
Furthermore, he discussed how the Brit should approach Miller’s mentally-disturbing way of speaking.
‘The only thing I question with Daniel is how’s he going to come back from this [Usyk] loss,’ said McGuigan.
Dubois struck Usyk down with a body shot that was later ruled illegal by the referee.
‘If he hadn’t have dropped Usyk with that body shot, he wouldn’t be crying robbery,’ McGuigan went on.
‘He’d be thinking “s**t I got overwhelmed, beaten up and dropped by a guy that’s not a massive puncher.”
The trainer talked a bit about his former trainee whose mouth seems to be giving Dubois a tough time.
‘He’s [Dubois is] fighting a guy who talks a lot of s**t. Daniel doesn’t like confrontation … And I hope for Daniel’s sake that he realises it doesn’t mean nothing.
‘Just get in the ring and do your thing. If Don Charles installs that confidence I think he wins.’
However, there is something McGuigan saw in Dubois which will be detrimental to Miller given the latter’s style of boxing. According to the trainer’s memory, Miller usually pushed his opponents backward — something the trainer observed would create such a comfortable situation that Dubois would box at his best.
‘It is the right fight for him [Dubois] because Miller pushes him back. Daniel’s best when he’s on the back foot,’ McGuigan said.
‘He’s got a great jab and unbelievable punch power. He’s really not the best when he’s attacking people.
‘That’s why he went on the back foot against Usyk, trying to walk him on to something, trying to time him.’
Now the trainer fancies Miller’s former style over the American’s present.
‘He [Miller] hasn’t been active. Back then [before his ban] his style would have been perfect for Daniel,’ McGuigan added, still speaking to Pro Boxing Fans.
‘The only thing I question about Daniel is how’s he going come back from this loss. If he hadn’t have dropped Usyk with the body shot he wouldn’t be crying robbery, he’d be thinking I got beaten up and dropped by a guy who’s not a massive puncher.’
In other words, Daniel Dubois should prepare for the heaviest blows he had taken in months. Additionally, he will face an aggressive fighter who sports a dirty mouth.
