Many combat sports’ fans had expected Ngannou, a former MMA heavyweight champion, to defeat Joshua who once held three world heavyweight titles in boxing. But what a good number termed the inevitable happened when the crossover fighter was knocked out in the second round of their ten-round bout.

One thing that encouraged Ngannou ahead of the bout seemed to be his highly-rated performance against WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury whom he knocked down and later lost to while still a debutant last year.

Among the big figures who commented post-fight was Carl Froch who submitted his own take through a personal YouTube channel called Froch On Fighting.

He said, ‘AJ deserves all the credit, he’s got in there, he’s done the business, he’s smashed Ngannou and that’s probably finished Ngannou’s career, he’s made a few quid, he deserves respect, he’s gone in there with two of the best in the business but we should never see him in the heavyweight ring, the boxing ring, ever. again.

‘This shows that somebody who is not a professional fighter shouldn’t be in with a former heavyweight champion. For me it’s justified what’s happened.

‘It shows that boxing, the art of pugilism, the sweet science, it is what it is. Ngannou just didn’t belong in there with Anthony Joshua.’

However, many would disagree with Froch, as some comments following the fight prove. One of the reasons mentioned for Ngannou’s early loss was his switching to southpaw. This particular mistake echoed Ngannou’s inexperience.
