Terence Crawford becomes next super-welterweight mandatory challenger
It is official that Terence Crawford is free to fight for a super-welterweight title in the near future, following an announcement from one of the sanctioning bodies.
Crawford’s journey through the weight ranks has been made a bit easier and fascinating by the rules one of the sanctioning bodies put in place. This rule empowered a champion to become a mandatory challenger for that sanctioning body’s title if that champion decides to move up the weight ladder.
Called the ‘WBO Super Champion’ rule, this authorized boxing champions to challenge those of higher weight classes who have the WBO title. Now Crawford who used this short way thrice and succeeded is about to do so again.
Tim Tsyzu who holds the WBO super-welterweight strap is preparing to face Sebastian Fundora, and the winner of this match must fight Crawford next, according to the WBO.
President of WBO, Francisco ‘Paco’ Valcarcel wrote the following on X as an announcement recently:
‘WBO will sanction Tszyu – Fundora, the winner must face wbo mandatory challenger with in 180 days..Negotiations for wbo mandatory commitment must be started 5 days after the fight.’
Crawford is seen as one of the best in his field, and his fights have been made interesting because of the kind of people he usually seems to face. Unlike some, his fights have been against the very best in every division he walked into. This made him one of the most exceptional pugilists of his time.
