Liverpool 3–1 Sheffield United: Merseyside Reds regain top
Liverpool beat Sheffield United (3–1) at Anfield to retain the top on the Premier League table.
The Merseyside Reds contended with a formidable Sheffield squad today, but was able to beat them by two goals.
Formerly, Liverpool player Virgil Van Dijk said his team knew there were areas they had to improve before things could change for them.
‘We also know that there are areas we need to improve on ourselves,’ he had shared.
‘Throughout this season we have had quite a bit of praise for the way we have managed to come from behind in games. There is no question that this is a strength and I could not be more pleased that we have this quality and have been able to use it on as many occasions as we have.
‘At the same time, though, going behind is not a good thing in itself and it would be much better if we could avoid being in this position.
‘Small margins will be increasingly important in the final stages of the season and this is an area where we can improve so we should definitely look to do so.
‘Sometimes it is just about being more clinical and more decisive in our work and the same goes at the other end of the pitch where we are creating a lot of chances and building a lot of pressure, but not always getting as many rewards as we would hope for.
‘Anything that we can do to improve these outcomes can only help us so we should definitely be looking to get better in both of these areas and also others.
‘This pursuit of excellence is necessary because we know it could make all the difference. It’s not about being overly critical of ourselves or holding ourselves to standards that aren’t achievable, but if we can get an extra one per cent here and there then we will see where it takes us.’
