Nigeria’s Super Eagles: Coach Poseiro to work for a lower salary following his new contract with NFF

Portuguese coach Jose Poseiro has agreed to continue working as the Super Eagles’ coach, after leading them to the threshold of being qualifiers for the African Cup Of Nations. This happened on Sunday; the first contract ended in July.

In releasing a statement for the NFF, the Director of  Communications at NFF, Ademola Olajire said that the coach has agreed to be paid lesser than he was once paid.

Previously, the coach’s salary was $70,000, but the NFF seemed incapable of paying him according to their contract, and once owed him a 10 months salary worth $700,000 in the process. Only later were they able to pay him $210,000 as a part-payment, with promises to complete it in the future.

Trustworthy reports have revealed that the wages from the just concluded contract have not been all paid, but the amount still remaining is yet unknown. The NFF has disclosed they would pay him all the remaining money in batches, but no exact period of time was given.

63 years old Jose Poseiro was employed when Amaju Pinnick was the leader of the NFF, now the federation has a new leader: Ibrahim Musa Gusau. It remains a wonder what made the past president of the NFF to agree to pay an amount he was not able to generate, but one explanation was that Nigeria really needed a new coach for the men’s senior team, after the the sacking of German Gernot Rohr.

One thing was to find a new coach, but most important is to find a very good one that could lead the three-times African champions to glory. Even though the NFF was unable to deliver their side of the deal, it seems they made the right choice in choosing Jose Poseiro.

Coach Poseiro will be paid about 30% lesser than he was paid in the first contract, which would be $60,000.

The coach will reduce the number of foreign work mates that work with him in managing the Super Eagles, according to the new contract. This was decided as a way to reduce the amount of money the coach would really need for this job. Nigerians would be hopeful that key people in the progress already being seen would not be laid off the coach’s work team in the process.

Now Nigeria’s Super Eagles will play against Sao Tome e Principe on Sunday, and it was expedient for this contract to be settled before then. Because the Nigerian citizenry have largely been in favour of the coach’s performance, making sure he agreed to stay on the job has was a win-win between them and the NFF.

One of the things that hindered the smooth payment of the coach’s former wages was allegedly lack of sponsors and insufficient funding. Were better results to start coming from the future competition Nigeria would be in if the Super Eagles won on Sunday, there is a good possibility that the desired monetary support would come.

Finally, as part of the first acts of the coach after re-entering the office as Nigeria’s permanent coach for the moment, the coach has added three more foreign players to the team. Their names are Jordan Torunarigha from Germany, Gift Orban and Victor Boniface.
