Spanish coach Jorge Vilda has been sacked by the RFEF (Real Federación Española de Fútbol), the governing body for football competitions in Spain, after he led La Roja, the Spanish women’s senior team to glory in the just concluded FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

His eviction was mostly because of pictures that showed he supported the former Spanish FA president, Luis Rubiales, after the controversial kiss at the stadium during the post-match celebration time. But the coach has made the headlines before now, when last September, the women’s senior team wrote a letter calling for his sack.

Being favoured by the then president who is now still under FIFA’s 90-days mandatory suspension, his was retained, and the conspirators were threatened with as big as 5-year bans. Some players among them later decided to keep playing for their country, but some maintained their self-exemption.

Luis Rubiales’ decision worked for both the team and their country in the end, since it left an able man at the helm of the team. But it was that victory which Jorge Vilda’s hard work helped to materialize that made it possible for the post-match incident that saw both him and his boss threatened with eviction to occur.

The champion coach was sacked just 16 days after he broke a record for his country by becoming the first coach to lead the La Roja to the champions’ stand. A great feat that would never leave the annals of Spanish sports in general.

Back in September when the women were complaining about him, a source said the reasons for the players’ dissatisfaction included how players with injuries were treated and how he selected his team. Now that a temporal president has taken the roles of his boss, his protection has fizzled out, since Luis Rubiales was the reason he remained the La Roja’s coach.

At the meeting where he clapped for Luis Rubiales when he emphasized he was not going to resign, Rubiales had called him the world’s best coach and promised him a new 4-years contract worth €500,000 per year. This promise seems to have become useless, since being linked to someone many think abused a woman by forcibly kissing her was not a good fact to include in anybody’s CV.

Investigations into the incident between Luis Rubiales and Jennifer Hermoso are still going on. Many think the suspended president would be sacked next, even though he has revealed a video where Jenni Hermoso appeared to be joking about the kiss and laughing about it.

Luis Rubiales has declared he was going to prove that the controversial kiss was consensual. If he is able to do this, Jorge Vilda might still be reinstated.
