Nigeria wins the first-ever C’wealth Women’s 4x100m championship.
Tobi Amusan, Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Grace Nwokocha of Team Nigeria’s women’s 4x100m relay team made history yesterday at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham by becoming the nation’s first women’s relay team to win a Commonwealth Games gold.
With a time of 42.10 seconds, the quartet broke the African mark of 42.22 seconds that they had established at the World Athletics championships in Oregon just a month earlier.
Tobi Amusan, who had just won the 100-meter hurdles gold earlier, gave the team a strong start before Rosemary Chukwuma’s strong third leg gave them an unbeatable lead.
Darly Neita of Great Britain threatened to overtake the 21-year-old Nwokocha, but she was able to hold on and win Team Nigeria’s first women’s 4 x 100m relay gold.
