Mikel Agu signs for Japanese top flight club.
Nigerian international Mikel Agu has agreed to a two-year contract with Japanese top division club Shonan Bellmare.
Agu stayed in Portugal for the majority of his career. The Super Eagles midfielder began his career with the Porto youth teams in 2010, but after nine years with the club—including loan stints at Club Brugge, Vitoria Setubal, and Bursaspor—he made the permanent switch to Vitoria Guimaraes.
The aggressive defensive midfielder established himself at Guimaraes, and at one point there were rumors of a transfer to Nantes, but those negotiations broke through.
Mikel Agu makes history by joining the team as the first-ever Nigerian player. They are currently two points above the relegation zone in 14th place in the J1 League. Agu would strive to keep his group afloat.
