43-year-old man drowns in fish pond, body recovered

A 43-year-old man in Kwara state has reportedly lost his life after drowning in an abandoned fish pond in Ogidi, Ilorin West local government area of Kwara State.

The deceased is suspected to have fallen into the fish pond from the slippery edges while he was sourcing herbs in the area which is said to have been overshadowed by bushes.

While his identity is yet to be uncovered, men of the Kwara State Fire Service on Saturday, recovered the corpse of the 43-year-old man.

This was as a resident in the area called on the fire service to rescue the victim.

Following the successful recovery operation, the state fire service in a statement signed by Hakeem Adekunle who is the Head, Media and Publicity of the Fire Service in Ilorin and made available to newsmen, said that they received a distress call from a Good Samaritan at about 6.24 a.m. on Saturday that a man had drowned in a fish pond in the Ogidi area of Ilorin.

The statement revealed that operatives of the fire service immediately swung into action to rescue the victim.

However, on reaching there, the young man was already lying lifeless in the pond where he had drown.

The fire service said after a successful recovery operation, it has handed the victims’ corpse to the Police in Kwara state.

The statement read: “Today, Saturday, September 2, 2023. Kwara State Fire Service responded to an emergency call at Alibarika community in Ogidi, Ilorin South Local Government area, Kwara State, at approximately 06:24 hours. The call for assistance came from Engineer Tunde Kannike, the community chairman.

“The firefighters conducted a rescue operation and tragically discovered the lifeless body of an unidentified man, approximately 43 years of age, in an abandoned fish pond.

“It is believed that the cause of this unfortunate incident was the man accidentally slipping into the pond, which was concealed by overgrown grasses. He was near the pond, attempting to gather herbal leaves when the accident occurred.

“Following the successful recovery operation, the Kwara Fire Service personnel handed over the deceased to the authorities at Nigeria Police G’ Division in Oloje, Ilorin, for further investigation and necessary procedures.

“Therefore, The Director, Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John Olumuyiwa, urged the general public to be more careful in their day-to-day activities and also they should be more vigilant in thier neighborhoods as to prevent similar occurrences,” the statement said.

In another story, a tragic accident involving a commercial vehicle and one Honda Accord car at the Olokuta area on the Akure-Ondo road in Ondo State has claimed the lives of two people while five others sustained injuries.

This is according to a Statement by the Ondo State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

The Sector Commander of FRSC in the state, Mr. Ezekiel SonAllah who confirmed the incident, Saturday, said that the accident which occurred at about 5:48 p.m., involved six male adults and one female adult.

He attributed the cause of the crash to speeding while admonishing motorists to always abide by the traffic rules and regulations, saying any violator would be arrested and prosecuted.

He said, “On Friday at about 5:48p.m at the Olokuta Correctional Centre area along Akure-Ondo road, a Nissan Primera commercial vehicle marked FGB-96XA and a Honda Accord car marked MUS-834 AL were involved in an accident.

“Two male adults died on the spot, while four male adults and one female adult were injured.

“The deceased has been deposited at the Ondo State Specialist Hospital morgue in Akure, while the vehicles have been handed over to the police.”
