Vincent Kompany to meet Manchester United as a coach, after being rejected as a player
Former-Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany, who now coaches the club’s main team, will lead his goal-hungry squad to a match against weak Manchester United on Saturday, after once being rejected by Alex Ferguson as a player.
Kompany is a legend at Manchester City, and his statements reveal just how much he would be willing to punch more holes into Manchester United’s capsising ship. With the Red Devils’ defense looking porous, and Marcus Rashford sweating to earn his keep, what will happen on Saturday might not be left to the imaginations if Ten Hag’s squad do not learn from their mistakes.
The biggest problem at Manchester United seems to be £47m Andre Onana, whose inclusion in the Saturday team could end sadly, given the harsh limelight he won for himself via his recent terrible performances.
Manchester City’s beginning of the season was not palatable, so a great hunger for points will spur the team at the coming match, while Manchester United will try to make its disappointed fans have a little pride again.
Kompany once disclosed that he was aware of an incident of Manchester United’s inquiry about him. The Red Devils did this while he was a very young player trying to move his career forward at Brussels.
‘United asked about me,’ Kompany revealed. ‘But I had other priorities at the time. I was studying for my A-levels and my mother made me finish my education before I could concentrate on football.
‘It’s a massive honour to be captain of this club and I can tell you that I feel really good. I have put my sweat and blood into Manchester City. I’m passionate about the club and I want success as much as the owners.’
But Alex Ferguson’s story in 2018 showed Ferguson admitting he saw a chance to sign the Kompany, but had his attention diverted to a more charming player at that time.
‘When I went to the Celtic v Anderlecht Champions League tie in Glasgow in November 2003,’ Ferguson said. ‘It was to watch the Belgian defender Vincent Kompany. However, my attention soon gravitated to Celtic’s energetic young midfielder, slight of stature but with an assured, calm way about him.
“What I witnessed was a player with a tremendous set of midfield fundamentals — his movement off the ball, his penetration of the Anderlecht midfield. I came away smitten by his performance, not least the timing of his runs. Leaving Parkhead I was totally determined to get Liam Miller to Manchester United.”
This rejection granted Vincent Kompany opportunity to build a great relationship with the Red Devils’ rival, Manchester City. A relationship that might increase Manchester United’s woes come Saturday.
