Star trainer and commentator Teddy Atlas reveals what he likes in a boxer
Teddy Atlas, whose full name is Theodore A. “Teddy” Atlas Jr., is an American boxing trainer and a fight commentator. How the veteran spoke about a boxing champion whose performance was cool to him only brought about special insight.
Atlas was born on July 29, 1956, on Staten Island, New York. He has had a successful career in the world of boxing and has trained numerous champions. Teddy Atlas has been a well-respected boxing trainer since 1976. He has worked with many fighters and has helped train 18 world champions. He spent six years at the legendary Catskill Boxing Club of Cus D’Amato, which is known for producing top-level boxers.
Apart from being a trainer, Teddy Atlas has also provided expert analysis and commentary on boxing matches. He is married to Elaine Atlas and has children.
The fighter that pleased the legend so much that he gave a surprising speech about him was Zhanibek Alimkhanuly, a Kazakh.
‘Zhanibek, here’s what he is: he’s a big middleweight with a tonne of amateur fights, very long arms; he’s a southpaw just to give you even more trouble to deal with him; he’s good; he’s damn good. He’s very pinpoint with his punches, technically solid and sharp,’ explained Atlas.
‘He’s very cautious and careful, but he doesn’t let it keep him from going when he has to go a little further. That’s his temperament; he is cautious and careful; he’s very accurate; and he doesn’t waste anything.
‘He goes to the body well; the thing is, when he did hurt the guy, he saw he could hurt him, and he went into room; he didn’t just stay there and try and win a decision.
‘He was like a predator in a way, that you are supposed to be in a ring, where he tracked him down and he took the prey back to his cave. I like that, and I want to see some of that.’
Though some could assume the old man wants to get included in the boxer’s training team, the opposite could be the case. The veteran’s assessment also shows what he likes in a boxer.
