Argentine player Lionel Messi nearly sounded like an old man recently while revealing how easy it is to become a Ballon d’Or winner and keep winning.

According to the player, it is easy to become such a player as would be given a Ballon d’Or title, but hard to retain that position like he and Cristiano Ronaldo did for more than ten years.

The eight-time winner of the Golden Ball said this while speaking about the lengthy battle for the most titles and accomplishments between him and Ronaldo.

‘It was a great battle, from a sporting point of view,’ Messi said. ‘We fed off each other’s rivalry because we’re both great competitors. He, too, always wanted to win everything, all the time. It was a very enjoyable time for both of us and for everyone who loves football.

‘I think we deserve a lot of credit for having managed to stay at the top for so long. Because as they say, it’s easy to get there. What’s difficult is staying there. And we stayed at the top for ten, fifteen years. It’s very difficult to stay at that level and it’s spectacular. And I think it remains a good memory for all those who followed us.’

It seems Messi reckons the battle is concluded, and many share that view since the American won more Ballon d’Or titles than Cristiano Ronaldo, among other things.

Journalist Tomas Roncero’s recent post on Instagram alleged that Lionel Messi should not have won this year’s award.

Cristiano Ronaldo reacted to the video, which said nothing good about three of Lionel Messi’s Ballon d’Or awards, much to the surprise of many.

The video had the following statement: ‘Hello friends. What we knew has happened. They were going to give another Ballon d’Or to Messi.

‘He went to retire at Miami, but he was already looking retired at PSG to prepare for the World Cup.

‘He won the World Cup, yes, well, but with 6 penalties in their favour.

‘The World Cup was 10 months ago, we’re in November. Messi has eight Ballon d’Ors well, he should have five, he has the Ballon d’Ors of [Andres] Iniesta and Xavi, [Robert] Lewandowski who won six trophies in one season and Haaland who was the top scorer of everything.’

Brazil’s president, Lula, however, thinks Brazilian players should imitate Lionel Messi. He said this after Messi led his country to great victories last year.

‘Messi should serve as an example to Brazilian players. The 36-year-old guy, world champion, with the Ballon d’Or and everything,’ said Lula. ‘Messi needs to be an inspiration of dedication for these kids.

‘Anyone who wants to win the Ballon d’Or has to dedicate themselves, they have to be professional. It doesn’t go with partying, it doesn’t go with a night out.’
