Sean Strickland versus Dricus Du Plessis: Who is the pre-match favourite?

Dricus Du Plessis is warming up to fight Sean Strickland for the UFC middleweight title on Saturday, but which of them is the pre-match favourite?

Sean Strickland recently beat Nigeria’s Israel Adesanya on September 9 to become the caretaker of the middleweight belt.

The decision victory is still precious to many because of how flawlessly it was executed by the underdog who was not the favourite going into the match.

Now the days of celebration are over for Strickland. The American must beat mandatory challenger Dricus Du Plessis to maintain the throne.

There have been in-depth discussions on the skills and abilities the two fighters would be bringing into the ring on January 20 at Scotia Bank Arena, Toronto.

For example, Du Plessis is a known aggressive fighter who is especially dangerous on the floor, while it seems that Sean Strickland who is a Jujitsu black belt prefers to fight standing.

It is expected of Du Plessis who beat Robert Whitaker by a TKO on July 8 to try multiple takedowns on his opponent.

However, the South African’s tendency to be athletic and aggressive might be adverse if used too much against Strickland. The last thing Du Plessis would want is to be so tired that his opponent would floor him with his trademark long-range punches and kicks.

Strickland is largely the favourite going into this very fight, with Dricus Du Plessis being looked at as a wildcard.

If Strickland loses, it will be a loud upset, but not bigger than what he did to Israel Adesanya.
