Kanu Nwankwo remembers Sam Okwaraji ahead of Nigeria’s AFCON semifinal match with South Africa

Former Nigerian international skipper Kanu Nwankwo recalled the memory of Sam Okwaraji following the Super Eagles’ defeat of Angola at Abidjan in the ongoing AFCON competition, and ahead of the semifinal match with South Africa.

Okwaraji died after collapsing on the pitch while playing against Angola 35 years ago, but was brought back to public memory when Nigeria’s sole scorer against Angola, Ademola Lookman, celebrated his goal the Sam Okwaraji way.

Victory over Palancas Negras set up a race between Nigeria and South Africa. A competition many think would be tough.

In his tweet, former Arsenal legend Nwankwo wrote:

‘Today’s victory over Angola is a poignant reminder of the adamant spirit of Nigerian football.

‘As we celebrate this triumph, we also honour the memory of Late Samuel Sochukwuma Okwaraji, who tragically left us while playing against Angola 35 years ago.

‘His passion for the game and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

‘Rest in peace, Samuel Okwaraji, your legacy lives on. #WeRememberOkwaraji #RIP.’

The Bafana of South Africa beat a strong Cape Verde to book their place in the semifinals, and are historically one of the best teams in Africa.

Nigeria who have qualified for the AFCON semifinals more than every other country will look to cross the finishing line ahead of their opponents this time.
