WBC Featherweight Championship: Nick Ball draws with tall Rey Vargas, promoter cries robbery
The WBC featherweight bout between England’s Nick Ball and Mexico’s Rey Vargas ended in a controversial draw.
Ball who knocked the tall pugilist down twice failed to score the winner in the judges’ perspective following the action-packed fight.
Queensberry Promotions’ Frank Warren disliked the verdict and said that his client deserved the strap.
‘Nick Ball should be a world champion tonight and will no doubt be in the very near future,’ he said.
27-year old Ball is at 5ft 2in, while 33-year old Vargas stands tall at 5ft 7½in.
The height difference was surprising to fans both during the weigh in and the match, and though Vargas put up a good performance in the early rounds of the bout, he nearly lost in the latter segments.
Speaking post-match, the Englishman lamented to DAZN, ‘I had two knockdowns and was putting the pressure on for the whole fight.
‘I was the aggressor and thought I did enough to win it.
‘It’s a bit frustrating but that’s how it is. I can’t get angry at it.’
However, there is naturally high possibility of seeing both men rerunning the match.
