A total of $1.7 billion spent as by EPL clubs this summer.
Deloitte’s study of the summer transfer market shows that Premier League clubs broke their previous spending records.
At last count, the 20 Premier League teams have spent a total of £1.5 billion ($1.7 billion), breaking the previous high set by English clubs in 2017 of £1.43 billion during the close-season window. Additionally, it exceeds the £1.44 billion spent during the entire previous season.
The all-time record for a whole Premier League season, £1.86 billion from 2017–18, might be surpassed in the current summer window alone with one week left before the market closes on September 1.
According to Chris Wood, associate director of Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, “the high levels of expenditure that we’ve seen in this summer transfer window so far is a clue that the business models of Premier League clubs are rebounding post-Covid.”
This summer, Premier League clubs have signed 135 players, which is close to last August’s total of 148 and already more than in the summers of 2019 or 2020.
