Senegal, the reigning African champion, would have faced The Netherlands in Group A on Monday, November 21, when the competition was initially supposed to begin. FIFA will instead make Sunday, November 20, the opening game between host nation Qatar and Ecuador, another team in Group A.

In each of the last four tournaments, the host team has played in the opening match. Germany overcame Costa Rica in 2006, South Africa was tied 1-1 with Mexico in 2010, Brazil defeated Croatia in 2014, and Russia easily defeated Saudi Arabia in 2016.

According to several sources, this has not yet been confirmed because the FIFA Council’s Bureau, which is made up of Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, and the heads of each continental confederation, is still seeking approval. The competition will now be held from November 20 to the final on December 18.
