“Planet Her and Hot Pink were cash-grabs and yall fell for it” – Doja Cat
Doja Cat who is currently on her Scarlet Tour rumbling through Texas this week with shows in Dallas, Austin and Houston, has re-uped her “cash grab” language about one of her old songs while onstage.
The Grammy-Award-winning rapper and singer stated this during her most recent onstage performance in Denver where she referred to Hot Pink‘s smash “Say So” as a “cash grab” while pelting the crowd on to sing along to her 2019 anthem.
“Come on cash grab,” she said.
This was not the first time Doja has used that phrase to refer to her early work.
Recall that in May this year, the singer and rapper said in now-deleted tweets that some of her early work was made for the money.
“Planet Her and Hot Pink were cash-grabs and yall fell for it,” she wrote about her second and third albums. “now i can go disappear somewhere and touch grass with my loved ones on an island while yall weep for mediocre pop.”
“Say So” is one of Doja’s best-selling songs to date. The sextuple-platinum track arrived on 2019’s Hot Pink. Nicki Minaj hopped on the remix in 2020, which helped vault the track to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“When I got that beat I went home and I locked myself in my room, and I was like: ‘Let me just open this up on Logic.’ I opened it up, I thought, I mumbled it, that’s how I began, and it just fell together really nicely, lyrically I feel like,” she told MTV of the song’s inception.
“I naturally write 70’s kind of more vintagey, funky music. I feel like that’s kind of my bag and I love it so much. It’s really fun to make.”
Meanwhile, Doja Cat’s ongoing Scarlet Tour is the singers’ first-ever arena trek, and both Doechii and Ice Spice are along for the ride.
The “Paint The Town Red” hitmaker had her 28th birthday just before hitting the road, and was spotted attending Usher’s Las Vegas residency to kick off her celebration.
