World women’s marathon champion Gotytom Gebreslase
Ethiopia’s Gebreslase took first place in the women’s marathon at the world championships in Eugene, Oregon yesterday. She broke free in the closing stages to earn gold. Additionally, she triumphed in the women’s event at the Berlin Marathon in Germany in 2021 and ran the Tokyo Marathon this year in third place, winning in a championship record time of 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 11 seconds.
Kenyan Judith Jeptum Korir won silver with a personal best time of 2:18.20. Israeli Lonah Chemtai Salpeter, 33, won bronze in 2:20.18. He is a Kenyan-born Israeli.
She is the eighth fastest women’s time in the history of the race
Gebreslase said that after taking the lead for a substantial portion of the race, Korir had asked her to pass,
“But I stayed patient,” she said. “Towards 40km, I felt strong and decided to leave.”
