100-level female Unizik student hit by stray bullet

A 100-level female student of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, has been confirmed dead after she was hit by a stray bullet.

The deceased, simply identified as Uche was reportedly killed when some yet-to-be-identified hoodlums, suspected to be cultists missed a shot at their target.

According to reports, the incident happened along the popular Miracle Junction in Ifite Awka, in Anambra State where eyewitnessess said the hoodlums were chasing a yet-to-be identified tricycle operator when the incident occured.

A source told newsmen that the hoodlums had aimed to shoot the tricycle operator while chasing him but missed their target and consequently, hit the student who was walking by the roadside.

The deceased, Uche, was said to be in the medical laboratory department of the institution and was on her way to the market before the bullet hit her.

The source said, “This deceased was a 100-level student of the Faculty of Health Science, she was killed on Thursday evening by a stray bullet shot by suspected cultists who were chasing a tricycle operator at the popular Miracle Junction.

“The tricycle driver was shot too, and he pretended to be dead, but surprisingly, he stood up after a while and escaped when his attackers had left thinking he was dead.”

The source added that the corpse of the deceased was thereafter deposited at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, in a statement, confirmed the incident.

According to him, Police patrol and surveillance have been intensified in the area while he called on all who may have bore eyewitness to the incident to avail themselves and help the police with more relevant information to proceed with its investigation.

Ikenga said the police was committed to bringing the perpetrators to book while noting that preliminary investigations had revealed that the incident was cult related.

He further reiterated the commands’ anti-cultism resolve, stating that the police would not relent in it’s efforts.

He said, “it is very unfortunate, preliminary information revealed that the incident is cult-related and we are already working with eyewitnesses to identify the perpetrators and possibly arrest them.

“Meanwhile, police operational positioning has been improved within Awka and patrols intensified.

“The command would not relent in waging war against cultism and other forms of crimes in the state, recently we just remanded 33 suspects in a cult-related incident. We also urge the residents of the state to always alert the police.”

Recall that Val9ja News had recently reported a similar incident in Benue State where a young man identified as Haaven Felix or Fabregas and suspected to be a student of the Benue State University, Makurdi, was allegedly shot by some unknown gunmen in Makurdi, the State capital.

A source had said the victim was shot by some unknown gunmen in what seemed like a planned attack.

Eyewitnesses revealed that Fabregas was at a bar, Havila, located adjacent the BSU first gate and only stepped out to get ‘suya’ when the gunmen hurriedly came on a bike, shot him and sped off.

The victim was however, rushed to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, BSUTH where he has been receiving treatment till date.
