“63 years ago our forefathers got independence for Nigeria. We need to get independence for Nigerians”- Aisha Yesufu
Popular Nigerian human rights activist and social media influencer, Aisha Yesufu has said despite Nigeria’s 63 years of independence from the British colonial government, Nigerians are yet to receive their independence.
Aisha Yesufu stated this in a prerecorded video shared on her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday while wishing Nigerians a Happy Independence anniversary of their country.
According to her, it is time for present day Nigerians to fight for their own independence as the country’s fore fathers fought their fight, emerged victorious and jubilated over their triumph but with the passage of time, Nigerians are again, held bond by forces as though, during the days of colonialism. This time, it is not by foreigners but by fellow Nigerians, she alleges.
Yesufu said, “My fellow citizens, Happy Independence Day!
“63 years ago, our fore fathers were jubilating about the independence that they had gotten. The independence of Nigeria. It is time for us to fight for our own independence. The independence of Nigerians.
“The Nigerian country as it is, has been independent but the Nigerian people have not been independent. Let me tell you something. This independence that we celebrate today, it wasn’t an easy task. And for the people who fought for the independence of Nigeria, when they were fighting for the independence of Nigeria, they thought it would never come.
“Some even said to them: why are you fighting for the independence of Nigeria? Why don’t you give up? Why don’t you just move on? All sort of things. But remember what they did. They stayed on. Those who fought. Not everybody fought but a critical number fought and they got their independence.
“We too must fight to get the independence of Nigeria. We will not sit and allow charlatans be the ones to dictate how our country will be run to us. And if I must tell you something, it’s to say this to you. Good must be more tenacious than evil.
“Why, we’ve had all these ones is because we have allowed evil to be more tenacious. Good people easily give up but the people who continue to give us evil, they never give up. They stay up and keep on dishing those evils.
“Different generations have fought to get the independence of Nigeria and when they are almost getting it, they just give up as they move on and it comes all over again. If they had done something, we wouldn’t be here. But guess what. The generations before, they also fought but they have up. They didn’t continue or stay on until they got that independence for Nigeria and so when they give up, the evil ones become more powerful and they put people down more and continue.
“So this generation must break that curse or whatever it is. This generation must ensure that they don’t give up. They must stay on this fight until there is an independence of Nigeria and independence of Nigerians.
“No Nigerian is more Nigerian than any Nigerian. And I just tell you something. The current evil corrupt political class that we have today, they have never been afraid as they are today. Forget the fact that they put a game face on. Forget the fact that they make you think that they know. Something shifted in Nigeria between 2020 till date and citizens that have hitherto, not bothered about the country are standing up and are fighting to get back the independence of Nigerians and so what must happen is that you don’t give up.
“For as long as those who do not wish Nigeria well continue to operate, those who wish Nigerian well must also continue to operate and do more. That’s the only way we can get the Nigeria we have all been yearning for.
