The VC who said that drug test results must be presented to the university by all students who intend to study in the university before they are admitted into the institution said the institution is currently working with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to help students involved in drug abuse and to rehabilitate them.

The VC said, “The drug status of students is important in order to help students to be free from drugs. The students will not be sent away from school if it is observed that they involved in drug abuse, but rather they will be rehabilitated in collaboration with the NDLEA.”

While listing those that would be graduating to include 100 PhDs, 326 academic Masters and 346 Professional Masters, the vice chancellor also disclosed that 7,128 undergraduate students would be graduating at the school’s convocation slated for Saturday, on October 7,2023.

He further explained that the institution would be introducing Russia Language as part of the general courses that students must pass before graduating.

This, he said is to make new knowledge available to students.

“Efforts are though being made to bring in full some of the foreign languages as degrees programmes but the varsity has made it a compulsory in General Studies that every student must study and pass a foreign language before graduation.

“We are going to offer Russia language in addition to the foreign languages we offer. Students are made to offer and pass one of these foreign languages,” he said.

While noting the efforts made by the university to achieve its mandates, he said it has embarked on fund raising for alumni, philanthropists and also identifying foundations that would help in sponsoring researches, trainings and others.

Drug abuse in Nigerian universities no longer appears as a mirage, unlike several years ago where it was more of a speculation.

In recent times, students, especially males have been reported to be gross abusers of drugs such as codeine, tramadol and many others.

While school authorities across the country as well as the government and some other relevant agencies are making efforts to curtail the trend, young people are seemingly making it worse by adamantly sticking to the unappreciated culture.

It is however worse today that even the ladies are alleged to have become abusers of a myriad of drugs and other hard substances including alcohol, weed, shisha, cocain and many others.

The health impact of consuming such substances cannot be overemphasized as health experts have said it can ruin the psychological state of the abuser.

Some sources alleged that they have had friends and families who developed various degrees of mental illnesses due to their consumption of hard drugs without prescription. This entails abuse of the drugs being consumed.
