Mother of former Senate President, Lawan dies at 86

Nigeria’s former Senate President, Ahmed Lawan and his entire family have been thrown into mourning as he loses his mother, Hajiya Halima Daja at the age of 86.

Hajiya Halima reportedly died on the night of Saturday, October 14, 2023, at her residence in Gashu’a town, Bade local government area of Yobe State.

According to a statement by Senator Lawan’s media adviser, Dr Ezrel Tabiowo, Hajiya Halima Ibrahim will be buried on Sunday in Gashua according to Islamic rites.

The statement read in part:

“Funeral prayers will, thereafter, be said for the deceased at the Gashua Central Mosque, located in the Emir’s Palace.

“Senator Ahmad Lawan appreciates the outpouring of love and support already received from friends, relatives, and colleagues.

“The family would like to extend deepest gratitude to all those who have reached out and offered their condolences, thoughts, and prayers during this time of immense sadness. Your love and support have been a source of strength, and they are forever thankful”, the statement said.

Senator Ahmed Lawan was the President of Nigeria’s 9th Senate history following the country’s return to democracy in 1999.

JED condoles victims of transformer explosion in Jos

In another story, the Jos Electricity Distribution Company, JED, has commiserated with the families of victims of a transformer explosion which occurred in Kabong community, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State on Saturday killing six and destroying many assets.

In a statement, the Head of Corporate Communications, JED, Dr Friday Adakole, explained that the fire incident which led to the death of six persons was a result of the explosion that left many wounded and destroyed residential buildings, including shops within the vicinity.

Dr Adakole on behalf of the company, expressed sadness over the unfortunate incident while explaining that the electricity company has extended its sympathy to the families of those who encountered losses during the incident.

He said that the Jos Electricity Distribution Plc is anguished by the unfortunate incident which has affected customers in its Kabong primary Distribution Transformer in the Kabong area, Rukuba Road Jos.

According to the statement, “Preliminary investigation revealed that the accident was a result of a high-tension line snap onto the low-tension lines which resulted in a voltage supply outside limits.”

“The source feeder tripped off and inter-tripped the Transmission end source from Makeri Transmission Station.”

The statement added that they would continue to monitor the situation closely and communicate the facts of this regrettable incident while explaining that an evaluation of the root causes is underway and appropriate measures will be put in place to avert future occurrences.

The statement further expressed gratitude to traditional and community leaders in the area for all their support in managing the effects of the accident and expressed deep sympathies to families who encountered losses as a result of the incident.

Recall that no fewer than 6 persons were reportedly killed while about 25 shops and houses were also razed in an inferno caused by a transformer explosion in the Kabong community of Jos North LGA of Plateau State in the early hours of Saturday.

While the inferno quickly spread to the neighbourhood, it was gathered that among the victims were a man, his wife and child.

It was also gathered that the incident, which occurred around 2am, was triggered when one of the high- tension wires snapped and fell on a transformer serving the affected areas.

The lightning was said to have sent a shockwave to nearby shops and residential apartments, razing every available item within reach, especially electronic gadgets like sound systems, fridges, fans and air conditioners.

While some of the victims died on the spot, Val9ja News has learned that others gave up the ghost at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital (Jankwano) where they were rushed to.
