The PDP through its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Debo Ologunagba who spoke to newsmen in Abuja on Sunday, said that Nigeria’s 63rd anniversary should rather serve as a wake-up call to all Nigerians and lovers of freedom all over the world to stand in defence of democracy.

Ologunagba said it was also a wake up call to stand in defence of rule of law, respect for human right and transparency in the governance of the country adding that the PDP was aggrieved by the current economic situation of the country.

In what he described as a reversal of all the gains and immeasurable achievements of the country’s founding fathers during “Nigeria’s golden years,” the PDP National Publicity Secretary said his party was taking note of all the developments and economic down turn in the country adding that the independence of any nation and its sovereignty was embedded in the right, liberty and freedom of citizens.

Ologunagba cited the recent depreciation of the naira against the dollar amongst other economic crisis facing the country.

He alleged that the nation was better off under the past administrations led by the People’s Democratic Party.

He said, “this is especially to participate in governance through free, fair and credible electoral process under a transparent and responsible government that is answerable to the people with utmost respect for the rule of law and constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens,” he said.

“Today, our naira, which exchanged for N187 to the dollar under the PDP has fallen to an abysmal N1000 and above to the dollar.

“Fuel which sold at N87 per liter under the PDP now sell for over N600 under the APC.

“Prices of staple food and other essential commodities continue to skyrocket with no end in sight,“ Ologunagba said.

Relatedly, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori has congratulated Nigerians on the 63rd independence anniversary of the nation.

Governor Oborevwori’s felicitation was contained in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon.

According to the statement, the Governor implored Nigerians not to give up despite the Country’s current dire circumstances while urging ‘Deltans’ and other Nigerians to support governments at all levels in their quest to salvage the nation and its economy.

Governor Oborevwori said: “On behalf of the Government and people of Delta, I congratulate Nigerians as we celebrate the 63rd anniversary of our Country’s independence.

“I send my warm felicitations to President Bola Tinubu, Deltans and the people of Nigeria on this year’s independence anniversary.

“Nigeria has been a source of inspiration for the rest of Africa for 63 years; thanks to the creativity and diversity of its people and its extended period of democratic governance.

“I have a lot of faith that our Country’s democratic system of government will keep growing stronger.

“As an administration, it is on record that in the past four months, we have taken steps to make life more meaningful for Deltans, especially the State’s workforce.

“We have also made genuine efforts to improve on the state of our infrastructure with the recent award of N78 billion contracts for the construction of three flyovers, cloverleaf and road expansion in Effurun and Warri, the State’s commercial nerve centre.

“As a young administration, we have remained focused on delivering our M.O.R.E Agenda to Deltans.

”Please be confident that we will remain focused on our objective and that we will steadfastly provide strong governance up until the very last day of our administration”.
