After Liz Truss served for only 49 days, Rishi Sunak was elected as Britain’s third prime minister this year and the first person of color to head the former imperial power on Tuesday. He has promised to improve the country’s ailing finances.

After being appointed by King Charles III, Sunak spoke outside 10 Downing Street to conclude the most recent remarkable turn in UK politics following Boris Johnson’s resignation in July.

Just before leaving Downing Street, Truss wished Sunak “every success” and stated that she was “more persuaded than ever” that Britain needed to be “bold” in addressing its problems.

Sunak defeated Penny Mordaunt, a rival candidate who was unable to receive enough nominations from Conservative MPs, to become the next leader of the ruling Conservatives on Monday.

After Johnson abruptly ended a comeback attempt late on Sunday, failing to convince Sunak to share control, the conflict split into two sides. Since then, he has kept a stony silence.

At 42, Sunak, a Hindu, is the youngest prime minister in more than 200 years and the first British-Indian.

US President Joe Biden referred to the selection as “groundbreaking” and promised to get in touch with Sunak soon.

Charles appointed Sunak as his first prime minister after assuming the throne following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at a morning audience.
