A fatal car crash along the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway has reportedly claimed the lives of two persons while one sustained injury.
The car crash reportedly occured around the Ayadere area and involved a Mazda bus and a Mazda car.
Confirming the incident to newsmen in Abeokuta, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, TRACE, Babatunde Akinbiyi, stated that the accident occurred at 7:10am at Ayedere village, Ewekoro Local Government Area of the state.
According to him, the accident was caused by one of the drivers who drove against traffic rules with an unregistered Mazda car.
The driver upon defaulting, reportedly had a head on collision with the Mazda bus marked SEY 311 ZY.
This led to the death of the two drivers at the spot, according to the TRACE spokesperson adding that a motor boy with the bus sustained varying degrees injuries.
Akinbiyi explained that the injured motor boy had been rescued and taken to a nearby hospital before the arrival of TRACE, saying that the driver of the car had been taken away by his family for burial.
Also, he said that the driver of the bus was deposited at Ifo General Hospital morgue.
“The unregistered Mazda car, driving in a direction prohibited by traffic law, collided with the bus, leaving the drivers of both vehicles dead on the spot due to the impact of the collision.
“The motor boy of the white Mazda bus sustained varying degrees of injuries and has been taken to a private clinic for medical attention,” he said.
Akinbiyi further warned drivers to desist from commiting route violation, saying that there are lot of dangers associated with route violation.
Recall that a trailer with registration No. T-4223 LA, had previously had a head-on collision with a Volkswagen and two motorcycles, killing two persons, while one other sustained an injury also on the Abeokuta-Lagos Expressway.
Following the incidents, Ogun State TRACE Corps in a recent statement by The Sango-Ota Area Commander, Adekunle Ajibade, warned the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW against indiscriminate parking of vehicles around the Toll Gate, also situated along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
Ajibade said the warning became necessary to NURTW members as this practice sometimes results in traffic gridlocks and unnecessary loss of lives on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
He noted that most members of the NURTW engage motorists, who park their vehicles indiscriminately without observing safety measures adding that such practice should be discouraged at the Toll-Gate area.
Ajibade said this would help to reduce mishaps during and after the ember months.
He also said that the recent accidents could have been averted if the driver of the trailer had not engaged in wrongful overtaking and had observed the speed limit.
“We are appealing to motorists to drive carefully and ensure proper maintenance of their vehicles to reduce road crashes, especially at the Toll-Gate area on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.
“In addition, motorists should refrain from reckless driving and reduce their speed to the barest minimum to stem mishaps during the ember months,” he said.
