Eddie Hearn brings update on Conor Benn versus Eubank Jr.
Matchroom Sports promoter Eddie Hearn recently said what is happening behind the scenes concerning the expected bout between Conor Benn and Chris Eubank Jr.
The two fighters were to compete in a professional boxing match back in 2022 before Benn was found guilty of illegal drug use, thereby causing the fight to be cancelled.
However, efforts being made this year to make the event happen are being hindered, according to Hearn, by more than the British Boxing Board of Control (BBofC) who think that Benn has not been cleared in their book.
Not long ago, an official of BBofC announced that Benn still has to follow due process if the ban imposed on him by the board was going to be lifted.
To this Eddie Hearn reacted, ‘His comments were completely inaccurate and that will be dealt with today by Conor and his legal team.
‘For us, the focus is on making the fight. Until it’s made it’s irrelevant talking about how it might play out.
‘When or if we get it signed we will deal with the situation. We believe he is cleared legally to fight.’
Hearn later revealed that the other problem in the way of holding the event was Benn’s future opponent, Eubank Jr. He alleged that Chris Eubank Jr. was trying to gain as much as he can from Benn’s bad situation.
‘We want Spurs versus Chris Eubank but he has to fight on that date [February 3],’ said Hearn. ‘We’re speaking to Eubank, and he’s the only problem making this fight, he thinks he’s in a strong position and wants as much money as he can.’
It has been made known by Eddie Hearn that Benn is legally cleared to compete with Eubank Jr.
‘He [Benn] has been through his hearing with the WBC,’ said Hearn. ‘He got completely cleared of any wrongdoing and reinstated in the rankings.
‘Then he chose to go through the UKAD ruling and got his suspension lifted and won the case.’
The fight will be held in the United States of America if making it happen in the United Kingdom turns out too hard, according to Hearn.
When asked who would permit the fight to proceed, Hearn said he hoped it would be the BBofC.
