Fury vs Usyk and Zhang vs Wilder: two expected boxing matches that might never hold
According to boxing commentator Carl Froch, Olexandr Usyk might not fight with Tyson Fury for one reason. Zheilei Zhang’s promoter, Frank Warren, also disclosed the likelihood of a bout between Zhang and Deontay Wilder.
A lack of trust in promoter Frank Warren laced Carl Froch’s statement as he commented on the possibility of the already-expected bout between Tyson Fury and Olexandr Usyk holding. Froch alleged that Warren was just trying to please the people by giving them hope that the match would actually take place.
‘It’s not real boxing,’ Froch had said. ‘It’s not proper boxing but I think we are now starting to understand it. I think maybe it was a cunning plan by Frank Warren – because what he’s done is got this Ngannou fight lined up that boxing purists are not very happy about but in the meantime, he’s announced Tyson Fury is fighting Oleksandr Usyk.
‘So people are going to watch the Ngannou fight with one eye on the shape and the performance – thinking of what’s around the corner with the fights quite close together.’
This sounds nothing less than believable, but fans hate the sound of it. Carl Froch did not stop there.
‘Because at the end of the day, Fury is getting paid his career-biggest payday for a ‘move around’ and I’ve said before I’d have done the same in my career.
‘Lucky for [Fury], Frank Warren and boxing that Fury has announced he’s fighting Usyk – because that’s very important that that fight happens. I’m still a little bit sceptical it will.’
Frank Warren has replied to his client Zheilei Zhang’s challenge to Deontay Wilder, saying the fight can be landed. It is public that Deontay Wilder wants the fight too, after Wilder’s bout with Anthony Joshua could not come to fruition.
Warren had the following to say about a match featuring Zhang and Wilder: ‘That’s a great fight, I wouldn’t have a problem making that fight, let’s see what happens. We’ll see, we’ll see. Zhilei’s with us and he’s made a massive impact and at the moment is mandatory for the WBO version of the title so he’ll be wanting to get his mandatory and get his shot at the title.’
‘In the meantime, he will fight, and whether that’s Deontay or not we will see.’
It is possible, according to this last statement, that the bout might exist only in people’s imaginations.
