Val9ja brings you reports from boxing’s heavyweight and super-middleweight divisions as fans prepare for the December 23 bouts, the February 17 undisputed world heavyweight event, and to see their favourite stars fight in the following months.

40-year-old Zheilei Zhang is among the ‘avoided’ boxers in the heavyweight division, alongside Congo’s Martin Bakole. The Chinaman stands stranded since his stoppage wins over formerly-undefeated Joe Joyce, and was allegedly rejected by hard-hitting Deontay Wilder who until loss to Tyson Fury held the WBC heavyweight title.

‘I would love to get on the Fury-Usyk card as a chief support,’ Zhang said to Express. ‘Right now, I’m just training, I don’t have any information.

‘I don’t have any updates. I can only keep myself hopeful. But in terms of opponents, I really have no idea because everybody’s fighting everybody else.

‘I like the [Efe] Ajagba fight. Bring it.’

Meanwhile, in the super-middleweight section, there have been good-humoured arguments on whom to consider the best Mexican boxer of the time.

Whose answer could be nearer to facts if not that of boxing legend and former American heavyweight champion Mike Tyson?

In reply to the question after being asked his opinion by Fight Hub, Tyson replied, ‘The best Mexican fighter right now? Benavidez is half-Mexican, I don’t know if he considers himself Mexican, but he is very exciting.

‘I like the way he fights, he throws a lot of punches, it’s going to be tough to beat him.

‘The toughest fight that he may have is with David Morrell, the Cuban guy, he is a very hard puncher and if he hits somebody then he can knock anybody out.

‘Then again, Benavidez is a very good boxer, when he wants to, he slugs a lot but he is a really good boxer.’

However, there was this boxer Mike Tyson once declared the Mexican Mike Tyson. It was surprising that Tyson does not consider him the present best in Mexican boxing. Furthermore, people would have liked to know what legendary Tyson thought of another boxer Saùl ‘Canelo’ Alvarez whom Tyson dubbed ‘The Mexican Monster’.

‘He [Cruz] has a lot of capabilities, he did great with Gervonta Davis and you know what makes him special, more than anything?’ added Tyson. ‘He is exciting, he keeps coming forward, that makes him exciting.

‘He [Canelo] is in a position now where he can do whatever he wants, he can fight, he can do movies or commercials, whatever it is that he wants to do, he is in that position to do it.’

In the heavyweight division, Anthony Joshua faces Swedish southpaw Otto Wallin on December 23; Deontay Wilder will fight Joseph Parker on the same day and venue. Being that they are the greatest fighters penciled to feature at the event, one of them must fight first. The problem might be solved with a coin toss as suggested by Wilder.

Concerning the super-middleweight division, Alvarez may not meet Benavidez in the ring next year as is expected.
