Former WBA, WBO, and IBF heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua’s victory over Otto Wallin on December 23 changed things for him in boxing’s heavyweight division. Two people recently suggested whom he should fight next.

Matchroom Sports’ Eddie Hearn disclosed before Joshua fought Wallin that Joshua wanted to become a champion for the third time. One of the men who dethroned Anthony Joshua, Andy Ruiz, spoke recently about whom he wanted Joshua to face next in the ring.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Ruiz said, ‘Well, there’s nothing to make of it. He did what he had to do. The opponent didn’t really have a lot of skills.

‘I feel he didn’t have a gameplay to fight Anthony Joshua and when you fight Anthony Joshua you gotta have a game plan.

‘I wish it would have been somebody with more skills, somebody who wants to win the fight, wants to throw punches, like me, I wish it would have been me fighting him.

‘Hopefully we do the trilogy but if not he’ll probably go another route.’

But Tony Bellew had a more scary and tempting suggestion. Since Joshua’s expected bout with Deontay Wilder became difficult following Wilder’s loss to Joseph Parker, Bellew suggested someone else with whom Joshua could stage a big fight.

Tony Bellew told iFL TV, ‘Do you know what, I’m not so sure because I’m not sure what belts are going to be up for grabs after [February 17 when Uysk and Fury fight].

‘What I would say is there’s only big fights out there for him. I’m going to put it out there, who wouldn’t want to see AJ versus [Francis] Ngannou?’

It is very difficult for Ngannou to accept such a suggestion, having said beforehand that he would not fight anyone in the ring till he has had a rematch with Tyson Fury following their record bout.
