Undisputed heavyweight legend shakes head at ‘spectacle’ fight
Undisputed world heavyweight legend, Lennox Lewis aired his view concerning the coming bout between Anthony Joshua and Francis Ngannou, saying it is only a spectacle.
New boxer Francis Ngannou whose boxing debut happened last year with Tyson Fury as opponent is expected to fight Joshua on March 8.
However, some think that Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, made the match possible because of the money it can generate.
After Ngannou struck down Tyson Fury in the third round of their ten-round bout, the former’s stock would increase to points that some heavyweight boxers have not experienced.
Many still think that Fury did not train well for the fight, and that Joshua will be the man to show heavyweight power to Ngannou.
Lennox Lewis on his part thought that the fight was set up to gain from Ngannou’s profile following his bout with Fury. A bout Ngannou lost.
‘Ngannou’s fight with Tyson Fury was a spectacle,’ Lewis said. ‘This fight with AJ is also a spectacle. Hats off to Ngannou for making the most of his opportunities. He’s done nothing wrong. This is just the HW division in the year 2024.’
Eddie Hearn posted the following on X:
‘Listen in to yesterday[‘s press conference]. The winner fights the winner of Fury v Usyk for Undisputed and when AJ joins your club, I know you will be delighted for him.’
Lewis replied to him:
‘IMO, this fight adds ZERO credibility to AJ’s resume. He’s SUPPOSED to win this fight and when he does, what does he gain or learn by beating someone in his second HW fight? If he loses, than it’s an absolute disaster. The same stood for Fury and it almost cost him everything. 🤦🏾♂️’
The fight will still hold, including the undisputed world heavyweight championship bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksander Usyk which will be held on February 17.
Francis Ngannou has said he would not fight the winner of that fight, only Tyson Fury.
