Usyk Vs Dubois: Usyk Wins Controversially
Olexandr Usyk wins Daniel Dubois in a controversial knockout called by referee Luis Pabon. Many fans including former heavyweight champion Carl Frampton are criticizing the decision.
According to Frampton, it was only a legal body shot. Hits below the belt line are disallowed in boxing, and defaulters are usually penalized a point, while victims were awarded a five minutes recovery time. Referee Pabon gave Usyk the said time, but the boxer spent only four of it. Olexander Usyk initially wanted to continue at the third minute, but the referee would not have it, telling him to take more time.
That was not a low blow. That was a body shot. He should have been counted out. Daniel Dubois should be unified heavyweight champion right now
– Carl Frampton
Victory came to Olexandr Usyk after he succeeded in felling Daniel Dubois in the ninth round for the second time.
Dubois’ team intend to ask for the cancelling of the result of the match. There also seems to be a high possibility for a rematch, since there is a division of opinions concerning who should really be the present World’s Heavyweight Champion between the two contestants. This would go against the contract that preceded the fight.
Do we have a definition of legal and illegal? The belly button is the line. Anything low of that is a low below
– Usyk’s Team
The match took place at Wroclaw, Poland. Few fans there believed that Dubois could win. Those that did not ended up making fun of him. In the days before the officially appointed match, a fellow sparring partner of Dubois’ observed that the superstar’s claims and promises were underrated by the media and fans of boxing.
He told them he knew Dubois, and that the fighter was able to deliver what he promised about Olexandr Usyk.
During the match, the real state of the spectators’ minds surfaced in unfriendly and unfair reactions towards the British fighter. Insiders noticed that the fighter seemed to be scared at the beginning of the match, but that he later settled into the match. Probably, he had to deal with the unfriendly weather generated by the most number of spectators present and Usyk’s well-refined techniques.
Daniel is very upset. He won’t even come here. He’s so disappointed and I feel that for him
– Frank Warren, Daniel Dubois’s promoter
Olexandr Usyk insists the hit was totally illegal, and even left heated words for his former opponent.
Boxing is sport and gentleman. It’s not a street fight,” Usyk said, adding: “I’m ready to fight tomorrow. In a rematch. In the street fight. Not boxing gloves but a street fight. Only fists
It would generate lots of controversy if the boxing officials neither cancels the result nor schedules a rematch.
