The World Boxing Council (WBC) made a record decision to rate Francis Ngannou among the best contemporary boxers in the heavyweight division following a bout with Tyson Fury.

In their post on X (formerly called Twitter), the WBC wrote: ‘Francis Ngannou did an outstanding job against the WBC heavyweight champion, and the WBC Board of Governors has agreed to rank him as No. 10 in the heavyweight division. @francisngannou #wbcboxing #wbcuzbekistan23′

This will be the first time a debutant gets that rating.

All this was in the wake of his controversial loss to WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury during Ngannou’s professional boxing debut, which took place on October 28 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fury was knocked down by Ngannou during the third round of the ten-round bout by a surprising left hook and could not do much to Ngannou throughout the match.

This was opposite what pundits envisioned, since Francis Ngannou was coming from the UFC following a misunderstanding with the company’s president and was not a professional boxer. Notable among the predictions before the match was the one that said that Ngannou was going to be knocked out before the fifth round because of that.

Looking back at the level of fighter he stood against all through the serious ten rounds, one would say that Mike Tyson, his mentor, did a wonderful job.

Many still believe that Ngannou won the match against Tyson Fury. Among them is Ngannou himself, who is asking for a rematch.

Now that the WBC has made the decision to rate him among the best boxers, he will likely be challenging Tyson Fury in their next fight for the four belts of the heavyweight division if Fury beats Oleksandr Usyk on February 17.

The bout between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk is expected to do two things: one is to prove whether Tyson Fury is still the boxer he once was and who should be the undisputed world heavyweight champion, even if the title is held for a week.
