Amanda Serrano, the undisputed featherweight boxing champion in the women’s category, will defend her title against Danila Ramos in a three-minutes-per-round, 12-round match on October 27, 2023.

This fight is hard for me because I honestly want to showcase that I’m capable of going the 12, three-minute rounds. But then again, that’s an extra minute so it might not go 12 rounds

– Amanda Serrano.

This will be the first time such a thing happens. According to Amanda Serrano, women have proven over the years that they can fight under the same rules as men.

‘Women have expressed for so many years that we’re doing it in the gym,’ claimed Serrano. ‘We’re sparring three minutes, we’re training 12 rounds, whatever we have to do, we’re doing it in the gym.

‘I hope it changes people’s minds, people’s view of women’s boxing. This is a fight for women everywhere to be treated the same as their male counterparts.

‘It’s going to be just a great night, not just for me, but for women’s boxing.’

Among the women who asked for such professional matches to be available for women were Claressa Shields.

“Championship rounds matter. If people say like, ‘Oh, punching power! Oh, knockouts!’ The truth is I have two less rounds, and also 24 minutes compared to 36 minutes the men have to knock somebody out. I’m not the only one they say that about,’ argued Claressa Shields.

‘She’s 12-0 with 2 knockouts,’ but nobody is saying that about the men and they have 36 minutes and to me it matters. I’m going to be sparring with the  men for three-minute rounds.

‘It’s a level of competition and two, and that’s why equal pay is needed. You can’t say women’s boxing is less than men’s boxing if they won’t’ even put us on the time and let us prove ourselves. Women overwork.

‘There’s going to be more punches, there’s going to be more power shots. To see the equalness, they will understand. Stop saying men’s boxing and women’s boxing, it’s boxing.’

The person that made this match possible for Amanda Serrano was YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

‘They shone a spotlight on me. I’ve been able to make lots of money obviously in the ring, as well as outside the ring – had many endorsements, sponsorships. Because of them, there’s been a lot more viewership a lot more people wanting to see women’s boxing,’ Serrano said of Jake Paul’s promotion company.

She continued: ‘There was a time when boxing was getting a little boring, it wasn’t fun anymore, and he [Jake Paul] came in and spiced it up. Some people want to see him win, some people want to see him lose – he has those controversies. He’s just making boxing altogether a little more interesting and I guess that’s what we need.’

Doctors and other healthcare professionals are still divided over the issue of how long a female professional boxer should fight in a match because of the alleged discovery that the female skull should not be punched on for as long as that of males. The opinion that supports the proposition that women boxers should get as much boxing time as men won in 2023, however, and Amanda Serrano versus Danila Ramos will be its debut application.

While speaking, Amanda Serrano said she did not want to go back to two minutes per round in the future after this match. One thing that remains hidden is whether all women agree with the new way.

‘For me personally,’ said Serrano. ‘I don’t want to go back to two minutes. It makes no sense to go backwards so hopefully other women are on board, they love the idea, they’ve been asking for it for many years now, and hopefully this is the first step.’
