Conceição’s statement came after he noticed that fans of FC Porto who came to support the team against Estrela da Amadora started leaving while the match was not finished yet.

The coach who played for ten teams from five countries will lead his team of young players against one of the best clubs in the world, and knew the importance of having a large audience of cheering fans.

FC Porto who rank number three in the Portuguese Cup are the only team from their league contending for the prestigious Champions League trophy.

In a statement published by the club’s website fcporto.pt, Conceição who has also coached at Vitória SC and Nantes FC said the following to fans of FC Porto:

‘It’s important to look at all matches as if they were for the champions league, honestly.

‘I’ve been here for many years and I hope the atmosphere will be a little different on Wednesday than it was today. I often talk about the passion our fans feel for the team, they are the first player because without them the club doesn’t exist, but it takes a little more from everyone.

‘We told the players that the game against Vilar de Perdizes, for example, was our Champions League and I hope the public realizes that the team is young and needs the fans, that strength and unity.

‘The team does everything to deserve the support of our fans. Today, after we reached the 2-0, there were a lot of people who unfortunately left the stadium, I don’t know what they were waiting for or if they were saving themselves for the game on Wednesday.

‘It is a warning that I make because we need our fans to have this strength for the remaining games. We have the championship, no one gives up on that at this club, so we will continue to fight, the Portuguese Cup and the Champions League, the most important club competition in the world, and we are the only Portuguese team fighting for it.’

Conceição had the desire to bring the trophy to Portugal and sounded optimistic.
