Cristiano Ronaldo loses ‘best Portuguese player’ to younger player — says expert

A football expert dethroned Cristiano Ronaldo from the best contemporary Portuguese player seat, electing a much younger footballer instead.

39-year-old Ronaldo who is yet to hang the boots is home for national duty as Portugal looks to face several countries on the pitch. The Al-Nassr star is Portugal’s highest goal scorer. He boasts of 128 goals in 206 matches.

But football expert Andy Brassell thought it would be out of place to continue calling the legend the best contemporary Portuguese player. Brassell argued that 29-year-old Bernado Silva of Manchester City should be given the high title now because of the look of things.

Silva who scored 11 goals in 88 appearances for Portugal might not have done much in the sight of some. However, Brassell who said the following saw things differently.

‘Roberto Martinez does have options. But because there’s so much quality in that Portuguese squad, I think people understand if he takes those options.

‘I think Cristiano Ronaldo realises now that sometimes he’ll start, and sometimes he’ll be a squad player and that is just what he’s going to have to live with.

‘It’s interesting because to even think about criticising Ronaldo two or three years ago would have been treated as complete heresy in Portugal.

‘Whereas now, I think people understand that Bernardo Silva is their best player.’

Portuguese player Joao Cancelo formerly said that their team did not depend wholly on Ronaldo. Cancelo said the following to RTP, a Portuguese radio station:

‘He is an important player and spent 15 years competing with Messi for the Ballon d’Or, but the peak of a footballer’s career is between the ages of 25 and 32.

‘He is an important player for us, but the national team does not depend entirely on him.’

This is expected to be the last time Ronaldo would play for his country. Who can say the former Madrid player has not had a great career?
