Harry Maguire’s mother has condemned the on-going treatment her son is receiving for scoring an own goal in a match between England and Scotland on Tuesday. It was Harry Maguire that gave Scotland their consolation goal, making the final scores 3-1.

When Maguire scored the sad goal, Scottish fans started singing for him. It is not different from the kind of song Draco Malfoy wrote to mock Ronald Weasley after he scored an own goal against Gryfindor.

But Maguire showed respectable resilience in dealing with the psychological bombardment, unlike many players would have done. This showed a wonderful side of the normally-benched Manchester United player, who plays as a defender.

Later in the match though, England’s fans made a counter song. This did not save Maguire from the marathon, oral lashes that followed the match. The torment came from fans, pundits and compatriots alike, with many criticising Coach, Gareth Southgate for including a player his club does not trust in the country’s first team.

The mother who knew what her son went through in their hands stomped over to the social media to defend her son. She said the backlash has gone beyond football.

‘As a mum,’ she scolded on Instagram. ‘Seeing the level of negative and abusive comments in which my son is receiving from some fans, pundits and the media is disgraceful and totally unacceptable to any walk of life never mind someone who works his socks off for club and country

‘I was there in the stand as usual, it’s not acceptable what’s been created, over nothing. I understand that in the football world there are ups and downs, positives and negatives but what Harry receives has gone far beyond ‘football’. For me seeing him go through what he’s going through is not ok.

‘I would hate to have to see any other parents or players go through this in the future, especially the young boys and girls breaking through the ranks today. Harry has a massive heart and it’s a good job he’s mentally strong and can handle it as others might not be able too. I wish this sort of abuse on nobody!’

Coach Southgate once shared how he felt about what the English community are doing to their representative. He said it was a joke, meaning it was absurd that Harry Maguire should be treated that way. Then he said he had never seen a player being treated in such a way.

‘It is a consequence of ridiculous treatment of him for a long period of time, frankly. I’ve never known a player treated the way he is – not by the Scottish fans, by our own commentators, pundits, whatever it is,’ Southgate said.

‘They’ve created something that’s beyond anything I’ve ever seen. He’s been an absolute stalwart for us in the second-most successful England team for decades. He’s been an absolutely key part of that.

‘I’ve talked about the importance of our senior players. He’s been crucial amongst that. Every time he goes on the field, the resilience he shows, the balls he shows is absolutely incredible. He’s a top player and we’re all with him and our fans were brilliant with him tonight.’

Gareth Southgate seems adamant to ridding the English males senior team of players like Henderson, who is now disliked by the LGBTQ community, and Harry Maguire. If no trouble brews from such decision at the pitch, he would seem correct. But if those two make any mistakes in any match while playing for England, Southgate himself might come under serious fire.
