Inter Miami player’s gives exclusive insight on Lionel Messi’s life at the club
In an interview that showed what it was like for Lionel Messi at Inter Miami and how the players and fans relate to the Argentine legend, Inter Miami Edison Azcona revealed several things about Messi’s life at Inter.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who is set to earn the eighth, arrived in the United States of America last year to fulfil several dreams that included playing where he was accepted, but he will also make that of 19-year-old Edison Azcona come true. All the excitement that followed the rumours of his coming and the reality might never be completely known, including the changes they brought to the lives of the players who worked in sizeable obscurity and the business opportunities that fell into the paths of many.
Edison Azcona had a childhood dream to play beside the Argentine, Azcona said during the interview: ‘Since I was little, I have always said that a dream of mine was to play with Messi, and I finally have this opportunity to share a dressing room, train with him and have that experience of being on the same team. It is a dream come true.’
It was this teenager who revealed a few things about how the player is treated at the club.
‘Everyone gets along with him,’ said Azcona. ‘They are very good people, humble. Sometimes, we travel and there are people from 5 in the morning waiting outside for Leo .’
Training sessions are always good for two things: gaining fitness and building connections among players. Edison Azcona also said something that might surprise many about one habit the team practices during such times in relation to Lionel Messi. One could refer to this treatment as that of a sacred cow, but another might prefer to say ‘a white elephant’.
Ancient kings had well-trained animals kept for separate occasions, costly beasts kept in their best conditions by selected caretakers. In the case of Lionel Messi, both the coaching team and the players understand that he is their best chance of winning any match, according to Edison Azcona.
‘Everyone understands that we are not going to try to hurt him,’ revealed the teen. ‘One tries to defend, but they are a little more careful. We don’t let him play in the games we play among ourselves, we defend him, but with caution. Nobody gets into it very hard.’
This means the only time Messi gets to play a real game is while facing Inter Miami’s opponents, something that might have remained inside knowledge till now. It is possible the club owners and other leaders at Inter Miami are unhappy with Azcona for this revelation, since it is embarrassing in some aspects.
The teenager also said some players were learning Spanish because of Lionel Messi.
‘I have not heard Leo speak English…,’ Azcona said. ‘Sometimes, he has said ‘good morning’ when he comes in, but those who speak English and do not know Spanish are learning to speak Spanish.’
It is safe to say that, according to the above statements, Lionel Messi is having a great time at Inter Miami but has the heavy weight of people’s expectations to bear every second.
