Luca Modric to leave Real Madrid for Saudi Arabia?

Croatian international Luca Modric might decide to leave for Saudi Arabia following the loss of his place at Spain’s Real Madrid.

After spending many years at the Spanish club and doing great things with both past and present teammates, it seems time has come for the 38-year-old to call it a day.

Modric signed a short contract with Real Madrid at the end of last season and was expected to stay until 2024. It is clear that he is unlikely to continue to play for the club at the end of the contract for two reasons: Real Madrid has a rule that dissuades signing any player of his age or further elongation of such a player’s stay; Modric now plays for less time than younger players usually play.

Starring in the Croatian’s place now is young and energetic Jude Bellingham, whose goals have been lighting up fans faces with smiles. Modric has become a second or third banana lately, following the Brit’s rise to the spotlight.

Recently, two Saudi clubs tried to get Modric for their squads, but no deal could be made. Apart from Al Ittihad and Al Ahli, no other club is known to be keen on the player, but that could change now that news of his seeming preparation for departure is spreading.

Speaking on whether the past-his-prime attacker will be leaving in January, a Real Madrid official announced that no offer is presently on the table for the player. This could be a subtle call for offers ahead of the January transfer window, when Saudi shoppers are likely to return to Europe for another shopping spree.

Among the past high-profile footballers that left Europe for Saudi Arabia were Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane, and former Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema. It also happens that Modric is the type of player the Saudis would like, despite his average form.
