Mason Greenwood Is Set To Leave Man Utd After Rape Accusation
Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood is set to leave the English club after official inquiries into an accusation of rape. The decision followed a six-month investigation and serious unfavourable reactions from the Manchester United fan zone.
‘I want to start by saying I understand that people will judge me because of what they have seen and heard on social media, and I know people will think the worst. I was brought up to know that violence or abuse in any relationship is wrong, I did not do the things I was accused of, and in February I was cleared of all charges,’ Mason said on Monday. ‘However, I fully accept I made mistakes in my relationship, and I take my share of responsibility for the situations which led to the social media post. Today’s decision has been part of a collaborative process between Manchester United, my family and me. The best decision for us all, is for me to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club.’
Greenwood and the club reached a symbiotic agreement that he should be granted the freedom to leave the club, while Manchester United would be saved the potential backlash of identifying with a suspected rapist.
According to Manchester United, “Based on the evidence available to us, we have concluded that the material posted online did not provide a full picture and that Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged. That said, as Mason publicly acknowledges today, he has made mistakes which he is taking responsibility for. All those involved, including Mason, recognise the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United. It has therefore been mutually agreed that it would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford, and we will now work with Mason to achieve that outcome.”
The forward winger has been important to both Manchester United and his country England because of his versatility and skill in playing from diverse attacking positions. He scored more that thirty goals and assisted the scoring of 15 of them while wearing the number eleven Manchester United jersey.
Mason started playing for the red devils during the 2018-2019 season; he’s played against big clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal. Some of the others are Southampton, Leeds United, Wolverhampton, Everton, Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
His debut for the English national team was in September 2020 at the UEFA Nations League in a match against Iceland. He also contended on the English side against Denmark in October 2020, and Wales in the same month.
The investigation had started in January 2022. Which club he might leave to could be disclosed later.
