Mr Luis Rubiales resigned today after declaring he would fight to the end. Few would have imagined that the end would come so soon, but there were many things on the line, and he had little choice. It was clear he would be fighting against the whole governmental organizations in Spain if he remained.

According to trusted sources in Spain, not everyone wanted the president to resign, even among the government officials. The repercussions of his action left both the Spanish government and his friends in a state: their hands were tied.

It was easier to dethrone a person than to lose their chances of hosting a World Cup. Also, the smear Rubiales’ continual officiating would leave would not affect only the football federation. Even the country’s image would be harmed severely.

This was shown in the statement released by the football federation while the controversy was still blazing hot.

‘Mr Rubiales’ actions do not represent the values defended by the Spanish federation, nor the values of Spanish society as a whole. His actions must be attributed solely and exclusively to him, since he is the one solely responsible for those actions before society, before the sports governing bodies and, if applicable, before justice.

‘To be clear, this position was that of Mr Rubiales, not that of the RFEF. We feel especially sorry and ashamed for the pain and additional distress this has caused.’

By putting forth this official statement, the federation tried to distance itself from the former actions of Luis Rubiales before and after the backlash. This did not save the federation though, till Luis Rubiales submitted his resignation letter.

The case is still being investigated. If Mr Luis Rubiales were found guilty of sexual abuse, he could go through as much as 4 years imprisonment. Both FIFA and some others are very interested in the case.
