The Premier League’s refereeing body (PGMOL) released a statement recently after a mistake by some of them handed Liverpool their first loss of the season. Liverpool’s coach Jürgen Klopp is not satisfied, and Gary Neville called for a more human approach to the guilty referees.

During the first half of the Saturday match between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, a goal by Luis Diaz was cancelled on the grounds that Diaz was offside. This left the scores at zeroes, but Liverpool would later lose the match after the Hotspurs won them by two goals to one.

Jürgen Klopp was unhappy and was not a bit pacified by an official statement released by PGMOL.

Who does that help now? We had that situation in the Man United game. Did Wolves get points for it? We will not get points for it so it doesn’t help.

Nobody expects 100 per cent right decisions on field but we all thought when VAR comes in, it might make things easier. I don’t know why the people are that much under pressure. Today, the decision was made really quick for that goal. It changed the momentum of the game so that’s how it is.

We score that goal, it was top, top, top, outstandingly well played. In a game where you don’t get a lot, it’s super important information. This is how we can hurt them, this is how we can beat them. So it was super difficult.

– Jürgen Klopp

While addressing the embarrassing error, PGMOL announced, ‘PGMOL acknowledge a significant human error occurred during the first half of Tottenham Hotspur v Liverpool,” a statement read. “The goal by Luis Diaz was disallowed for offside by the on-field team of match officials. This was a clear and obvious factual error and should have resulted in the goal being awarded through VAR intervention, however, the VAR failed to intervene.

‘PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error. PGMOL will immediately be contacting Liverpool at the conclusion of the fixture to acknowledge the error.’

Many might have called for the sack of the offenders, but former Manchester United player Gary Neville thinks that is not human. In his post on X (formerly Twitter), he aired his coolheaded opinion. One of the things he mentioned was that the collective desire to make decisions faster brought about the error.

‘Sunday opinion – Chelsea and United are the way they are currently due to cultural issues and chaos,’ Neville wrote. ‘ETH and MP are good managers working in very difficult and challenging environments. Look up top! – The VAR mistake was a really bad one.

‘However we’ve all been demanding quicker decisions and I think they have tried to enforce speed in decision making. Speed will cause inaccuracy and it’s now about a rebalance. – the two officials have been taken off their next games. Imagine how they feel this morning and let’s be human. There should be consequence for such errors but in my opinion a couple of games out is more than enough.

‘Think of it as a player suspension for a sending off. This isn’t a sackable offence by any stretch so let’s remove that language – Sorry doesn’t mean anything. It does. It’s an important value all our parents have tried to instill in us. Taking responsibility and owning your mistakes is important and should be valued. – finally enjoy your Sunday and I look forward to the abuse for this tweet.’
