Francis Ngannou versus Renan Ferreira: PFL heavyweight talks about fight
PFL heavyweight champion Renan Ferreira was optimistic about getting to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou.
People doubt that Ngannou whose arrival to professional boxing has produced several amazing sights and stories would fight anymore in the octagon.
This is because of the surprising progress he seems to be making in the discipline even as a kind of newbie.
After nearly beating the arguably-best world heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury as a debutant, the Cameroonian was placed among the top ten by one of the sanctioning bodies. But Ngannou has a role to play as PFL’s most famous fighters, and a recent match between Ryan Bader and Ferreira at PFL versus Bellator successfully produced a worthy MMA opponent for Ngannou.
This opponent, Renan Ferreira, was speaking to MMA News in an exclusive interview not long ago when he was asked whether he haboured any doubts about Ngannou’s seriousness to fight with him.
‘No, not really,’ he replied. ‘I trust the process. He’s got a contract with PFL, we announced the fight, we’ve talked about this.
‘He’s talked about it, so I don’t think in his mind he feels like he can get away from fighting me.’
Ngannou’s early days in professional MMA were characterized with tangible growth — especially after his first loss. The African went from only punching to learning how to wrestle after former UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic dominated him to a memorable victory.
Later down the road in his career, Ngannou would start incorporating wrestling into his game. That was how the dangerous puncher went from fighting on the feet alone to being dangerous on the floor too.
If the same growth happened in boxing, it is possible that Francis Ngannou might not have to appear in the octagon for a good period of time.
