New UFC middleweight king publicizes campaign plan
New UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis laid his plans out for public eyes following discussions on whether he would fight for the UFC light heavyweight title.
After beating Sean Strickland by a favourable split decision at UFC 297, the South African had no intention of defending his new title against former champion Israel Adesanya or going up the division ladder soon.
This was made clear to fans during a recent podcast owned by Cameron Saaiman.
Du Plessis said the following to Saaiman about fighting for the light heavyweight title:
‘Yeah, eventually. I saw a tweet, somebody said they think to qualify for it, you need to defend your belt three times. I don’t hate that idea.
‘How Conor (McGregor) did it, it made a lot of sense. He was just on fire… It was obviously the right thing to do because he absolutely destroyed Eddie Alvarez. But now, everybody wants to be a double champ.
‘I understand that. I want to be a double champ, and I’m going to be a double champ. But I am willing to say, “Okay, if there’s people left to fight.” I’m not planning now to say, “I’m moving up to light heavyweight,” after beating Izzy.
‘I think it’s fair to say, defend your belt three times. That’s very convincing in taking care of your division. Then, go up to light heavy.’
Du Plessis is still recovering from injuries he sustained while trying to dethrone Strickland. After the healing process, he will likely quench oppositions to his rule before setting off for another throne.
