The accident took place along Ogidi-Abatete Road, in Anambra State’s Idemili North Local Government Area.

PREMIUM TIMES learned that the incident involved sand loaded Mercedez tipper and a 608 bus with 19 people aboard.

The passengers attended the funeral for a relative when the bus collided with the truck.

A witness who claimed that there were more than four casualties said the tipper ‘s driver lost control of the vehicle when its tire burst.

“No fewer than seven people died on the spot while other passengers suffered injuries,” he said.

Most were members of the same family heading to a funeral ceremony.

Federal Road Safety Corps spokesperson in Anambra,

“About 5.20 pm on Friday, June 12, 2020, we received a distress call on a fatal road traffic crash (RTC) that occurred around 5.15 pm near Buckie Polytechnic, along the road between Ogidi and Abatete. The FRSC rescue team from the Nteje Unit Command was dispatched immediately to the crash scene.

“The crash involved a Mercedes Benz 608 with AA205DMA registration number driven by one Ezeugwu Christopher and a Mercedes Benz Tipper with XD651GDD registration number, driver name given as FC Ugwumba.

“Seventeen (17) adult males, one (1) female adult, and one (1) female child was involved in the casualties. Totaling Nineteen (19).They were all rushed by members of the C to Twinkle Hospital, Ogidi.

“Six (6) male adult victims were referred to the Iyi-Enu Specialist Hospital, Ogidi, in critical condition. Information coming to us after a follow-up hospital today Saturday, June 13, 2020 states that four (4) have been confirmed dead by doctors at the Iyi-Enu Specialist Hospital and their bodies deposited in the morgue hospital.

“The FRSC Sector Commander, Andrew Kumapayi, condoled with the deceased’s family and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery, warning vehicle owners and drivers against the use of expired or worn-out tires, particularly during the rainy season.

“He also recommends that only brand new tires can be used in vehicles as the most used tires, popularly referred to as tokumbo tires, are outdated.”
