The contested group’s leader was likewise released from custody and found not guilty by the court.

In his appeal, dated April 29 and designated CA/ABJ/CR/625/2022, Kanu requested to be released and found not guilty. After being initially charged on December 23, 2015, Kanu was eventually released on bail on April 25, 2017.

The Federal Government had accused Kanu of being a terrorist, but the Court of Appeal on Thursday ruled that the abduction of Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria was illegitimate and overturned all the accusations.

The Federal Government was found to have violated all national and international laws when it forcibly returned Kanu to Nigeria, the Appellate Court said, rendering the terrorism allegations against him ineffective and illegal.

The charges brought by the Federal Government against Kanu were overturned and dismissed by the Appeal Court in a decision by Justice Oludotun Adebola.

The Appellate Court then absolved Kanu of the alleged offenses.

According to Justice Adebola, Kanu’s accusations were dismissed because Nigeria failed to extradite him in accordance with the law.

The Appeal Court additionally ruled that the Federal Government’s omission to reveal the locations and dates of the alleged crimes was fatal to the terrorist accusations and rendered them subject to dismissal.

Ifeanyi Ejiofor, a human rights activist and lawyer for Kanu, responded to the verdict on his Facebook page on Thursday by declaring that Kanu had finally won.

Finally, “Appeal allowed; discharge and acquittal of Oyendu Mazi Nnamdi KANU. He wrote, “We have triumphed.
