Anthony Joshua vs Deontay Wilder: fight-deal turns to trash
Boxing fans dreaming of a showdown in the heavyweight division this December might be disappointed since the fight-deal between Deontay Wilder and Anthony Joshua has become invalid.
Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, gave the reason for this frustrating setback. According to Hearn, the deal was settled, and the fight was expected to take place in January. It is alleged that most fans wanted Tyson Fury, Olexandr Usyk, Deontay Wilder, and Anthony Joshua to fight at the same venue in December.
The desire to have an undisputed heavyweight champion has made both pundits and fans call for a showdown between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder. Also, people want to see the dethroned heavyweight champions, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder, face each other in the ring. The now-invalid deal Deontay Wilder made with Joshua had taken years to take shape, but all the negotiations now seem to have been a waste of time.
Here is what Eddie Hearn had to say while explaining what really happened:
‘That was supposed to happen in January, we accepted the offer. We know it’s not materialised now. Because it was made by someone who couldn’t deliver the fight at that time. We’d agreed, Wilder had agreed, now we’re talking to other sites about that fight in February or March and that’s still the plan, very much the plan.’
Deontay Wilder held the WBC belt from 2015 to 2020, making 10 successful title defenses. He has lost only two fights in his entire boxing career of more than 40 matches. But the two losses remain contested since he alleged that Tyson Fury cheated in the two matches. Wilder is not the only one accusing Tyson Fury of tricking with his gloves.
Though Deontay Wilder alleged that Fury inserted an object into the glove Fury used to win him, there are rumours that Fury could have used the wrong gloves while fighting. Tyson Fury’s next opponent, Francis Ngannou, alleged that some past opponents of Fury say he cheated with his gloves.
Anthony Joshua united the IBF, WBO, and WBA belts, but unfortunately lost the belts to Olexandr Usyk.
Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder’s place in contemporary boxing is a respectable one. This might be why many fans want to see them face each other in the ring.
